Rescued Moments 1.20.15 | Seattle Cat Photography

Hi friends –

Here are just a few moments to share with you from the other day at the rescue while I was there photographing adoptable kitties. Each time I go in there are new faces, and sometimes there are some ‘older’ faces that I sort of hope not to see again(because I hope they were adopted since I last saw them). And I want the sickly kitties to be better next time I’m in!

Holiday Tidings | Reflections

Merry Christmas, all! A tad late to say it but I think I have good reason…well actually I’ll make a few excuses about being with family.

I do hope that the holidays have brought good tidings to all you fabulous people out there! For once I was able to spend the holidays back here in England, away from Seattle…they are both homes to me. I have spent half my life in the Pacific Northwest, but my family and heart lie in England, usually so very far away.
It’s been crazily busy, seeing relatives and friends, joining in with festivities and food that I normally miss out on. My son has had the chance to feel included and involved (as well as reprimanded by many people who care!), which is what he so lacks and yearns for, and it’s been a treat to see him within the family I knows he wishes were always around.

I suppose I could lament about how I didn’t get my proper trip to London this time, how I didn’t get to go the cat café that I set my heart on. How I didn’t get to see some of the long lost friends that I wanted to, and most assuredly how I didn’t get the chance to slow down and spend time out taking the photographs that I wanted to (well there’s never enough time for all the photographs I want to take). I hadn’t spent Christmas here since 1999! I hope everyone had time to enjoy their families and friends, because they are precious gift.

I am flying back to Seattle today, much sooner than I’d like to, and with a heavy heart about leaving family I wish I could be with more often, as well as the green field-checkered landscape that is unspoiled in my mind. But I have to focus on what I’m bringing back, if it’s not what I’ll go back to. Aside from entirely too much Lego brought by Father Christmas/ Santa for my boy, I’ll be bringing back a business plan that I’ve been working on to relaunch my photography venture, goals for the coming year (look out!!), and new memories. There are several memory cards of images that I need to back up and process too.

I wish everyone well and hope you all hang in with me in 2015; I’ll be posting about my new photography session offerings really soon! So excited for the New Year. On my way to the airport right this minute!

Henry & Clyde | Seattle Dog Photography

I desperately need to catch up with all sorts of things that I’ve been up to lately, but this is a quick dose of canine sweetness for you today. Meet Henry & Clyde (so it’s actually a double dose), who I photographed on an overcast morning at Magnuson, here in Seattle. After all the shy cats I’d been photographing of late, the big dog energy and naughtiness made for a delightful change, and a wet one; almost immediately after we got to our shooting spot, Clyde (the big ‘brother’) found one of the teeny hidden spots that go down to the water of Lake Washington, and got himself soaked. Naturally he told Henry, the younger ‘innocent’ pup that he should follow, so they both right away got their groomed coats all soggy. Such is the doggy life!

Of course these two were/are very friendly, as you would probably suspect, and Clyde has a deep bark that commands the attention of everyone around him. They both went barreling around the area with so much excitement – it’s hard not to be enthused when you are around Labradors, retrievers and dog mixes of these breeds; they’re loony!! Cats would just not approve…

Photographing the Golden Years | Seattle Pet Photography

Here is the dapper old pug known as Max that I photographed recently. I am really hoping to have the chance for more opportunities to photograph older animals; ones that are in their ‘golden years’. The soul in those brown eyes, the many folds in his skin, the grey whiskers, it’s all fascinating to look at; such character!

To capture memories of humans’ beloved animal friends is such an honor for me. I have heard from a number of people who said they wish they had done a photo session with their dog or cat before they passed on. Please do let me know if you would like to talk about setting up a ‘Golden Years’ or Borrowed Time session with your animal friend, I’d love to hear from you.

End-of-life Photos of a Special Cat | Seattle Cat Photography

I took some photos of my mum’s cat Louie on my recent trip back home to England; a beautiful white cat – even with him being ear-less, he still was handsome (lost his ears to skin cancer some years ago). Yet I knew these would be the last photos I would take of him. After twenty years, his body was ready to shut down, and I could see that in his every move and his tired but still-magical eyes. I would watch him slowly make his way up and down the stairs, with much effort thanks to arthritis. He couldn’t see properly anymore; high blood pressure had made his retinas detach and caused blindness. And he couldn’t hear anymore either. Sometimes he would sit basking in the sun, looking happy as most cats do when doing just that, but he usually seemed restless, not knowing how to be comfortable.

A loved companion animal has a gift in terms of a loving human caretaker knowing when it is time to end the suffering by choosing euthanasia. Most animals know death and illness far more cruel, or have never even felt loved before. But it’s the hardest decision to make, even when you know it’s what is best; to end the suffering and give that animal peace, after giving so much of themselves to you. Twenty years is a long time, so much can happen in two decades. There’s so much love and attachment that happens in that time; they become part (and so often, become the spirit) of your home. It’s very hard to let go…

I’m glad I was able to get some end-of-life photos of Louie, particularly to give my mum and stepdad. Photos don’t replace memories, but they are a way for us to freeze time and hold those special moments close. So as much as I love taking photos of all sorts of things that embody life – new babies, children, parties, of animals looking for a new life (and family) of their own – I actually hope I can capture more special and precious memories like these, of companion animals before they pass on.
