A Cat’s Holiday Wish | Seattle Cat Photography

Wishing you the Happiest of Holidays, whatever you celebrate at this time of the year. And mostly, warmth and love for all those animals out there that need homes. I believe that there’s the right home out there for every one of them. Peace and love to you all!

Bend Xmas 3A

I took these photos of Bend just before Christmas, as he had been waiting a while to get adopted, hoping that our holiday campaign would get him noticed and that it would get him a home for the holidays. As luck would have it,  just as I was finishing processing them, Bend found a home; funnily enough, several otherBend 2 web times this has happened too, for other cats… It’s as if I’ve sent some kind of energy out there to say “Adopt this cat, his photos are almost ready!”. But here they are anyway. I’m thrilled to pieces that Bend has found a home. He had fast become a favorite of mine at the rescue, waiting far too long, in my opinion. I was so happy to see him every time I went in to the rescue and it’s always bittersweet to see a favorite cat start their new life. Wishing you a long and happy one, Bend. You beautiful boy!

It’s the Little Things… | Seattle Pet Photography

I hope this finds you well on this holiday, #Thanksgiving, one that I hope you are spending with family, friends, and animal friends who you love and cherish. I think it’s a great time to stop and think about not only the big things we are grateful for, but also all the little things that make our worlds complete, and for me, that boils right down to even the shortest of comments I get from you on my posts so I know that checked in with me that day, here and on my Facebook page. THANK YOU for following along and appreciating my work, my images; I appreciate every one of you. It’s the little things…

I am insanely grateful for every single person who volunteers with animal rescues, I love you all!

And I’m beyond grateful for the animals in my own life, for their companionship, their unconditional love, them being my inspiration.

And holy moly, I am grateful to every pioneer of photography and the camera (they are my superstars). Now that it’s 2015, we take for granted that they exist (although we could without all the selfies), but imagine the world today without the invention of photography. Had pioneers like William Henry Fox Talbot not created the first photographic negative in 1835, taken of a small window at his home, we wouldn’t be quite where we are today. Being able to encapsulate our lives and memories on camera, freeze time and tell stories, make change and stir feelings within others with single images, as well as with the moving image, is something I’m so grateful for.

Anyway, have a fabulous holiday weekend. Be good to your loved ones. They’re there when everything else is stripped away.

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them. ~  JFK

Wings of Rescue Mission 11.20.15 | Seattle Rescue Pet Photography

Just this Friday, about 1000 dogs and cats got a second chance at a new life, and I was lucky enough to witness the start of some of them. It was just about a year ago now that I photographed a Wings of Rescue Holiday Airlift that flew dogs and cats up here to Washington from California to find their new homes. I was blown away then at the sheer number of animals that arrived here, at the massive operation that goes on when all these rescues pull together to make this happen. Instead of animals facing euthanasia in overcrowded shelters in California, where overpopulation is a big problem, Wings of Rescue gives them a chance at a new life in other states, where adoption rates are higher.

First here are some images from the loading portion in CA, courtesy of Jim Nista

SO,  Jim Nista, my pet photography contact in CA (and volunteer photographer at Long Beach Animal Care Services), sends me a message the evening before the mission asking me if I might meet the flight and take photos again. It then occurred to me that the rescue I volunteer my time taking cat photos at, Seattle Area Feline Rescue, just might have some cats on board, since we had started transferring in cats from CA (I found out we were expecting 11 cats on the flights). I would HAVE to go meet this year’s airlift and photograph the arrival.

This year’s Home for the Holidays Airlift apparently broke the world record for the most animals flown to rescues in one day, close to 1000. It took 24 planes to do that, flying them to rescues in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wisconsin, and Illinois. Washington alone received about 400 animals; PAWS, the NOAH Center, Kitsap Humane Society, Skagit Humane, and Seattle Area Feline Rescue met the  approximately 100 dogs and cats from the flights at Paine Field.

Here are just a couple of shots after we continued our journey onto the rescue…I ended up helping settle the cats in for the night. Luckily I’ll be able to follow up with these little ones soon.

This kitten was in with another one until I realized they weren’t getting along, so they were separated. Then she was climbing the bars to get a better look at me. So we had to have a cuddle before I said goodnight.

I have so many thoughts and big feelings about this whole thing. I’m so grateful to the pilots who donate not just the use of their planes, but they also donate the fuel. I’m constantly grateful to volunteers at rescues and shelters everywhere for their tireless work with animals. I’m so glad there’s this massive effort to do something like this (and I know everyone involved wishes they could do even more). Yet, there’s always this frustration that there is such a need to have to move such a large amount of animals around to get them adopted. But it does feel good to know that we can come together to help find homes for dogs and cats like this. It’s really pretty amazing. Let’s keep being amazing, everyone!

Seattle Meowtropolitan Pop-Up Cat Café Event | Seattle Cat Photography

Cats and coffee.
That’s the winning combo behind cat cafés (maybe you’ve heard about this brilliant idea?) and Seattle is about to get two of them! I’m so excited…

On Valentine’s Day, one of the cat cafés that has plans to open here had a ‘Pop-Up’ Café event down at Flutter Studios in Pioneer Square, and I was invited to come and take photos (*scroll down for lots of photos), so of course I’m going to tell you all about it. When I was in London at Christmas I had plans to go and visit Lady Dinah’s Cat Emporium, London’s first cat café (but more tea there than coffee, and quite rightly so), BUT with it being the holiday season, I just couldn’t get a spot. So sad! This event was a chance for Seattle Meowtropolitan Café to do a weekend test-run and I’d say it was a success; there was definitely no shortage of people who love both a cup of local coffee as well as hanging with cool cats. Because you have to limit the amount of people that are in the space at one time, so as not to overwhelm the kitties, people had to buy $10 tickets ahead with assigned times, and they were SOLD OUT for both days that weekend. Now I know just how many cat lovers there are in Seattle; so many that there wasn’t even space for any walk-ins!! That makes me happy there’s so much kitty love swirling around…

Aside from having a coffee, the real reason to come to a cat café anywhere in the world that you may be, is CATS. Two rescues brought cats to the studio, MEOW Cat Rescue of Kirkland, and the Seattle Animal Shelter, but the kitties from MEOW mostly had the run of the place, save for upstairs where the coffee and cookies were. I’m sure the rescue was very selective about the kitties they chose to bring, to make sure they got on well together and were great around people. Along with tables and chairs set up for people, there were cat trees, cat toys to get the kitties playing, and Jennifer from The Cat Ball brought along one of her amazing, yes, you guessed it, cat balls (you can see it in a few of the photos; I so want one for my cat photography!). And although the cats couldn’t be taken home with anyone on the day, people could fill out applications for the cats that were there; I know Seattle Meowtropolitan really wants the future permanent cat café to be a haven for rescue cats and a means for helping some to get adopted.

Mud Bay
was also there with a table set up so you could make catnip toys for the kitties that MEOW had brought along (or others back at the rescue), or for cats at home, and I almost didn’t mention the coffee! That was provided by Seattle’s own Herkimer Coffee, and some yummy cat-shaped cookies were made by volunteers (a couple of those came home with me for my boy). I do believe that Hermiker Coffee has been chosen as the future permanent coffee roaster for Meowtropolitan.
Since I was lucky enough to spend the whole morning there, I got to spend lots of time snapping photos and getting acquainted with the cats. I think a few cats didn’t spend the whole time out (and different ones came for ‘the second shift’) but the ones that hung out to mingle were:
Suzie Q, a tabby girl, who seemed to like cuddles and investigating; a pair of kitten sisters called Holly and Ivy, that I think literally jumped around for a solid couple of hours playing with feather toys; Larson, a handsome Siamese boy, who was guarding his cat tree hideout until someone coaxed him out to play; and a medium hair tuxedo called Archie, who was happily lazing high in a cat tree for just about the whole time I was there. He was not at all bothered by all the humans…

I wish I could have stayed even longer and perhaps had a sit down with some coffee and a cat, but I left during the lunch break (both cats and volunteers needed some down time), which was actually when a news team visited to get some footage for a local news story on the event. *I wish they had come sooner because they brought a nice light with their camera (it had been quite dark in there before then, and I couldn’t use a flash, so it was a bit of a challenge getting noise-less images)! I expect that in the permanent space there will be some lovely windows through which the cats can watch the world outside go by; we all know how much cats love sitting by a window, watching birds and who knows what else… I also imagine books and newspapers, since cats love to lie on those when you’re reading them. Oh, and I’d also love to see some of my cat photography on the walls…naturally!

Judging from the success of cat cafés elsewhere (Portland already has one) and by this event alone, this combo of cats and coffee (or tea) will be a hit, and I actually do think there’s room for two such venues in Seattle. The city is known for loving its dogs but now cats might get some coffee shops to call their own. Once these cafés can get through the red tape of combining animals + food/drink (although I’ve probably eaten my fair share of cat hair in my own food, having had cats all my life…), it will be great to see where this all goes.
It really would have been interesting to hear from people who came, whether they have cats at home and are just major cat-lovers, and if they don’t have cats, maybe a cat café would be a cool place to come and hang out with kitties for a while. I’d love to hear what prompted people to come; I would imagine if I couldn’t have cats at home (like if a roommate or partner was allergic to them, or landlords didn’t allow pets), I’d just jump at the chance to hang out with my laptop and a mug of coffee for simply hours. What about you? Would you go to a cat café?

I hope this was as successful an event as it seemed to be and these cafés are indeed brought to life here in Seattle, for both cats and cat-lovers all over the city.

And I’d love to hear from you, either here or over on my Facebook page; come hang with me over there too!!

*Note: Seattle Meowtropolitan Café raised money through a crowdfunding campaign to get their venture off the ground and this was all made possible by donations made through Indiegogo. It’s great to see crowdfunding bringing great projects and dreams to life!

Rescued Moments 1.20.15 | Seattle Cat Photography

Hi friends –

Here are just a few moments to share with you from the other day at the rescue while I was there photographing adoptable kitties. Each time I go in there are new faces, and sometimes there are some ‘older’ faces that I sort of hope not to see again(because I hope they were adopted since I last saw them). And I want the sickly kitties to be better next time I’m in!

I hope you enjoyed this little glimpse; I do have to get back to processing a couple of cat photos so I can post them ready for potential adopters. And back to my big business plan. I have new session info to post next…excited to do that!

If you’re not yet following me on Facebook, come on over and see me!!
